I wanted to post a quick update so you could see how my seedlings are doing. As you can see in the photos below, most seedlings have sprouted and are looking great!
Seedling update…
The cauliflower sprouted first. I was so excited to see these little seedlings start making there way out of the seed within just a few days. Next up was broccoli and brussels sprouts, followed up closely by rhubarb, yellow onions, and thyme. The milkweed is just now starting to poke through. I’m still waiting on the blueberries, but the seed packet said those have an 80 day germination (or something crazy like that)! The bunching onions and asparagus haven’t made an appearance yet either, but I’m hoping they are just slow germinators.
Dilemma?
Below is a large pot with my brussels sprouts. Not thinking, I planted ALL of the seeds, instead of saving some for successive plantings. I’m not sure WHAT I was thinking! The second image shows how pretty much ALL of them sprouted so I’m stuck with a thick mess of brussels sprouts. There wasn’t much online about how to remedy this, but I did find one method of tomato seed starting called ‘dense seed planting’. I am going to use the recommendations from his vlog (sctomatoman on YouTube) to transplant the strong seedlings into larger pots once they get their second set of real leaves. I am really hoping that it works out. Brussels sprouts are one of my favs and I’m looking forward to growing them in my garden… plus, they look so cool on the stalk!
Tomato Time!
Today was my day to plant tomatoes as well. I was planning to plant them in the bigger 4″ pots from the get go, but after watching the dense planting method, I decided to go ahead and start them in the 6 packs and transfer in a few weeks. A few different varieties are planted, but I think I’m going to run and get a few more tomorrow. I’d like to have a good selection, and I might even be selling some tomato plants to friends if they look healthy.
Remodel Status
Lastly, here’s a sneak peek at Mr. Prairie getting our carpet glue scraped off so we can expose the cement slab and get it prepared for our cement flooring. I’m so excited! It looks really nice in the areas he has prepared so far. I mentioned in my very first post that we are in the midst of lots of remodeling, a bedroom addition, and SO MANY PROJECTS. It feels never-ending… but we are trying to enjoy the process. In my mind, this place looks amazing, but I’ll tell you right now IT DOES NOT. It is such a mess in my house. There is literally NO WALL we can take photos against. Someday… someday it WILL look amazing!
