If you have a dog, especially a dog with a fluffy coat that’s full of volume and I mean volume, then you’ll know what the picture below is. If you don’t own a dog, you may think this is weirdo stuffing for a pillow or the material used for a really, really bad wig. This featured mongo mound of fluff, is what came off of one of our dog’s, Maggie, in one session of brushing. Yeah, girl’s got hair.
Maggie is definitely our fluffiest and therefore, the shedding-est (made up word) of our current dog tribe. In fact, one year, I jokingly glued some of her hair pile to a small paper plate, attached ribbon to either side and wrapped it up as a toupee for my dad. It was obviously a joke because who’d wear something that god awful looking on their head and the most obvious, that’s just gross. Anyway, our other dogs need a brushing every now and then, but not one of them rivals Maggie.
In the past we’ve used a curry comb, traditionally used on horses. It worked pretty well, but a friend told me about another grooming item, the FURminator (around $25). Not only does this brush work well at getting the loose hair free, but all of our dogs tend to doze off. The FURminator is gentle enough to keep your dog relaxed but efficient enough that you’re pulling wads of hair off of the comb blade after every stroke. Oh, some handy-dandy info; do NOT wear exercise pants of any kind while brushing a highly shedding dog. I looked like I’d been rolling in a pit of dog hair by the time Maggie was looking polished with her latest brushing. You’re welcome. Ha, ha.
