This year has been something when it comes to everyone near us having a plethora of produce. We’ve exchanged garden produce at the gym and as I’ve mentioned in an earlier post, produce has gone to work with Mister, has been placed in the teachers’ boxes at school, left at the staff lounges, foodbanks, given to the mail lady, the post mistress at the Post Office, friends, family, you get my drift. Anyway, I got a call from a neighbor about how she and her husband had two large apple trees that were so heavy with apples, some branches had broken and if we wanted any apples, to come on over and help ourselves. In a short amount of time, I left their yard with a very heavy bag teeming with beautiful apples.
In the past, when our trees have yielded a large amount of apples, I’ve made homemade applesauce with cinnamon, honey or brown sugar and some water in the crockpot. This fall, after peeling and slicing up the apples, I threw in some cinnamon, cardamom and coconut sugar. It turned out really tasty and the house smelled fantastic! Who doesn’t love the smell of cooking apples?
Then, Mister brought in three strawberries from our yard that one of our dogs, Lily, hadn’t gotten to. This dog loves raspberries and strawberries. I do not understand her canine palate but I roll with it. Ha, ha. Anyway, Mister was able to retrieve three strawberries before Lily landed her little eye on them. There’s just something about the flavor of homegrown food and this was another example of yummy goodness.
We’ve got one more watermelon left to eat, five zucchini and four cucumbers. As much as I enjoy eating veggies and fruits from our garden and trees, it’s also nice when the season is over. You’re done fighting garden pests, extreme heat/sun and discovering overlooked veggies the size of your leg that by then, they’re too big for human consumption, so over the pasture fence they go. Anyway, it’s been a heck of a year with our garden yield and hopefully this continues into next year’s garden! Rock on, crouton!
