This past Saturday, our lone nectarine tree yielded an amazing amount of fruit! I mean, an apocalyptic amount of nectarines. As in, a high probability of black and white Cold War photos of bomb shelters with nectarines lining the shelves in the background. See the photo below.
This harvest pictured above, is minus two bags and three large bowls of nectarines. Yes. Yes, we have plenty of fruit. So much, that I’ve given four bags to friends and family, one bag to the elementary staff, Mister has taken a bag to work, tomorrow I’m taking a bag to the middle school, two bags to the elementary school again, a bag to our neighbors, two or three bags to our church foodbank, a bag to a friend and another bag to our town’s foodbank. One neat aspect of having a garden and fruit trees, is that everyone shares with everyone. It’s kinda like a milder Christmas spirit with a different kind of stress; get it gone before it goes bad. Ha.
I did whip up a tart for some of my mama friends to enjoy over conversation, http://pin.it/qnbjlnmefaefk6 . It turned out pretty and tasty. At least, the topping and filling was tasty.
One disclaimer I have to share, is that the crust had gone stale. Yep, gluten free crusts go bad. Drats. Bookmark this important info in your memory bank if you ever purchase a gluten free pie crust.
This brand of gluten free pie crust (comes in graham cracker, gingersnap & chocolate) that I buy at Fred Meyer, is consistently yummy and doesn’t fall apart easily but, it does have a shelf life, as I found out. It doesn’t have a “best by” date, because I looked everywhere before I even opened up the packaging, but trust me on this. Lesson learned and shared! I’m off to eat a nectarine or two!
