Holy moly. This is the season of bounty. Over Labor Day Weekend, we really lived it up. Yep, the almonds on one of our almond trees was ready to give birth. This is the first time our almond trees have produced a significant amount of nuts to actually give to friends, family and neighbors. It was so interesting to see how almonds are when they’re ready to be picked!
Mister hauled out the ladder to reach the nuts that were higher up on the tree. Then the real fun began when Little Red and Little Man argued about who got to climb up and pluck the almonds off of the branches. Arguing offspring is always enjoyable, huh? Nothing better than that. Anyhoo, Little Lady then became the Einstein of the group and exited the garage with a long stick that she used to gently shake the upper branches with. It worked like a charm! Luckily, we were wearing a roundabout version of safety goggles, sunglasses, because those big suckers came down pretty fast. When in the husk, almonds are not small, so we all definitely felt a few smacking our heads on the way down to the earth, but nothing that warranted whining or a Bandaid. I might add that during the dodging of the airborne almonds, Mister and I were also having to create some peace between Little Red and Little Man. They were both determined to not give up on who got to be at the top of the ladder (Mister was by them). Good times, good times. The combo of falling almonds and children participating in a loose version of King of the Mountain, will keep you on your toes.
Having a successful almond tree, with one more on the way, was definitely a cool experience not only for the Littles, but for me as well! I’ve never seen almonds in anything other than the bulk section or a bag at the grocery store. Here are photos of the harvest off the first almond tree! Oh giddyup!
