So, when we bought our house, it was in rough shape and I mean rough. Animals had gotten in through open windows and had settled in. The house had been abandoned in March of 2003 and we came across it in August of that year. The realtor kept trying to steer us in the direction of newer homes (ours was built in the late 70’s) but we loved the open floor plan, vaulted ceilings and the good bones. There was a funk that was offensive to the nostrils and random stains on some of the walls that I could not identify. This was after teaching a few years surrounded by people who didn’t make it a habit to hold back on boogers, vomit, saliva, tinkle or loose stool, so I feel comfortable in saying that I was already proficient at identifying liquids that can cause a reaction of making one dry heave. I’ll post pictures of our home when we first acquired it on another post. After six entire weekends of painting every room, Mister tearing up the badly stained and smelly carpet, linoleum having hardwood flooring put in by professionals, it was inhabitable so we moved in. We also had to deal with mice in the double digits and snakes in the basement but that’s all been taken care of! Almost 15 years later, our house just needs two bathrooms updated after we’ve painstakingly updated almost the other areas of the house and sealed up holes that were allowing nature to cruise on into our living space.
Enter the last bit of our updating. It would be these lovely closet doors upon walking in through our front door. They’re not awful but the faux wood does say late 1980’s or Golden Girls. The doors are in great shape and didn’t have kicked in holes that the other doors had when we bought our place, so instead of buying new doors, they were going to be painted. A few weeks ago, I’d purchase Behr paint at Home Depot that had paint and primer in one, but things kept popping up, preventing me from accomplishing this task. Well, Saturday night, the kids were piled on the couch watching Paddington 2, Mister was downstairs watching Sci-fi and I had a decent amount of energy left from a busy day, so I grabbed my painter’s tape, paintbrush, paper towel (I always get drops of paint where they don’t belong), newspaper to place on the floor and the gallon of paint. Giddyup! Mama (that’d be me) had a goal and bammo-wammo, forty five minutes later, along with taping off the trim, the first coat of paint had been applied!

These doors required two moderately heavy coats of paint and one light coat that was more touch up in some areas. After this was completed, I knew that I needed a medallion of some sort to attach the new knobs to (bought the knobs from Hobby Lobby last fall), so I found what I was looking for at Michael’s Craft Store. I wanted something simple and I had luck in the wood crafts aisle and purchased these babies for 29 cents a piece. Once home, I spray painted the wood pieces gold on both sides then when they were dry, I drilled a hole in the middle of both medallions and also a hole in the closet doors where I was wanting to attach these and the knobs. Since the knobs were not long enough to stick out and secure with a small bolt, I brushed super glue on the wooden pieces, placed them on the doors. When they had dried to the doors, I then brushed super glue on the knobs where they screw into the door and waited. It worked! They’re securely attached and look pretty cha-cha!
Even Mister, who has a love affair with all things wood and faux wood that’s rather annoying to say the least, admitted last night that the doors look better. It also brightens up that space, not that it needed much brightening up since that was another reason we wanted to buy what is our current house. We have a lot of large windows. Anyhoo, here’s the finished product. I get to tackle the den closets this weekend. Same Golden Girls’ era look. Like, gag me with a spoon!
