Have you ever been heading out to run errands, being uncertain about which errand will be checked off the list first? This morning, when Little Man and I were leaving the house I had decided that we needed to go to the grocery store and didn’t have time to stop and see a family friend trail his sheep across highway 55 in the neighboring town of Eagle. Well, with a text from the rancher teasing me about skipping the trailing and after the first errand, Little Man wanted to see the sheep and considering the amount of time left before the band (a herd) was to cross the highway, I figured why not? So, we cruised down highway 55 to where the sheep were to trail, parked the car and walked to where we could see the herd and the rancher who is a dear friend of my family.
The sheep made their appearance on time, which is very impressive considering they can be as easy to have arrive on time as a parent with a very stubborn toddler who has other ideas other than easily getting into a car seat. Anyhoo, the police were late to stop traffic to keep the sheep safe as they were to cross highway 55. I texted the rancher to let him know the police were still a no-show. Shortly after, he called me to see if the police had arrived yet. Apparently there’s a dispatcher, a new one to Idaho I’m guessing, who didn’t know that he/she needed to actually send two police with their two cruisers to halt traffic heading north and south. About 15-20 minutes later than the original time, the police arrived, stopped the traffic on the highway and the herd began their walk across highway 55 up into the foothills of Boise.
Since Little Man and I were close to the sheep and very comfortable with the task of trailing sheep, ha, ha, we jumped in and helped. Now, remember, I was on my way to run errands, not interact with sheep; I was sporting a knit skirt with Birkenstocks for my lower half attire. I looked like a vain dingbat. This was definitely a rare fashion statement when trailing sheep down a road. Oh well, sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do.
Our walking down highway 55 took about 15 minutes, I hugged the rancher hello & goodbye, Little Man and I crossed the highway back to my car and away we drove to replenish our supply of fruits, veggies, our love affair with dairy, etc. Little Man and I were happy to help our rancher friend and then complete our last errand, all around lunchtime! Baaa . . .
