I recently became obsessed addicted to the delicious fresh ground peanut butter at Fresh Thyme. I discovered it as we were traveling for a wrestling tournament. There was a Fresh Thyme right across the street from our hotel so I decided to stop in and grab some breakfast goodies. I left with bananas, wheat bread, and the most delicious homemade peanut butter I had ever tasted.
We polished it off quickly… and a couple days later I headed back to the store in our hometown to grab some more. It’s certainly not the cheapest peanut butter I’ve eaten. It costs $3.99 a pound! To compare, we used to buy the 2 pound container of Jiff at about 15 cents an ounce ($6 for 40 ounces). The Fresh Thyme PB costs about 20 cents an ounce ($8 for 40 ounces).
Could I do this?
I started wondering if I could possibly make my own fresh ground PB instead to save money and still enjoy the deliciousness. Soon, I realized that making peanut butter is something I should have been doing ALL ALONG! My goodness! I had no idea peanut butter was literally peanuts ground up in a good blender or food processor. Literally NOTHING else is necessary. If you want your peanut butter to be sweet, you can add a sweetener like honey or sugar… or you can buy honey roasted peanuts and the sweetness is built in!
How can it be that simple?
Here’s how I made mine. I purchased a 52 oz container of dry roasted peanuts at my local bulk food store for $6.48. These were not organic, which is what I would prefer, but this is all they had. I dumped half of the peanut container into my Ninja Professional Blender with Nutri Ninja Cups (BL660) blender along with 1/4 cup brown sugar and 2 Tablespoons of local honey, turned the blender on and let it go. It’s pretty fun to watch as the peanuts go from being large chunks, small chunks, a crumbly mix, and finally a creamy peanut butter. If you blend it longer, it will be creamier. Blend it less and it will be more of a ‘chunky’ peanut butter.
It truly is that simple!
But is it worth it?
Yes!
The cost breakdown for this yummy homemade peanut butter came to about 15 cents per ounce. That is REALLY reasonable… especially since there isn’t a whole lot of labor involved. I literally had 3-1/2 pints jarred up and ready within 15 minutes. In my opinion, that’s worth the time and savings. Truly, it tastes way better than anything you can buy in the store… and it costs less (or about the same in some cases). To compare, the Fresh Thyme freshly ground peanut butter came to 20 cents an ounce, Jiff Natural averages about 15 cents an ounce, and another natural peanut butter I priced (not fresh ground) came in at about 18 cents an ounce.
I would highly recommend trying this delicious homemade peanut butter. I really want to try almond or cashew butter next. Have you ever made your own peanut butter? Comment below!
