Little Lady was sitting on the couch last night, giggling at something on my iPad. When I asked what was funny, she showed me. I too, began to laugh when I saw what she was watching.
It’s the early ’80’s. Throughout the country, the fashion trends are bad. Picture a young elementary student sporting a thick, wavy bowl cut (not a good look for thick, wavy hair) and glasses with a teeny heart sticker in the bottom corner of one lens. Both the ‘do and the glasses back then were unisex, so it was a handy look for all children. Boy or girl, the look could be pulled off rather well by both sexes for an unattractive look. Remember, we’d just left the disco era that included leisure suits and the bottom of pant legs wide enough, that a small mammal could safely hide from view under there. Options for eye wear, were pretty much black or brown frames, so the choices were not endless. They were rather cut and dry.
To add to this plethora of awesome looks, were the workout get-ups. Remember the song from the early ’80’s by Olivia Newton-John, “Let’s Get Physical”? The p.e. teacher at the time paired us up with a classmate where we were to find a song that we could put an exercise routine to. My partner and I chose Olivia Newton-John’s song and made up our dance, that I’m fairly certain went something like step right, step left, jumping jack, maybe throw in a sit up and repeat until the song ended. With our tights, leotards and leg-warmers, because one can never be too warm when exercising, we rocked the exercise routine. Actually, I’m not sure if we wore the typical exercise outfit of the early ’80’s or attire that made even more sense for intense exercise; sweatpants and sweatshirts. Either way, I’m sure it was entertaining and warm.
I have long since ditched the leotard, sweats, etc. Besides going to a gym about 3-4 days a week, I also found this great app last year, 8fit, that is perfect for busy people who want to exercise but struggle to fit in the time. The app isn’t free but it’s very convenient. It includes 10-15 minute intense exercise routines that are rarely the same, yoga, meal plans (I’ve only made one meal and it was tasty), exercises to focus on certain areas to tone and strengthen, and a way to log your activity, which for me, is a great motivator. Another helpful resource to add variety to my exercises, is Pinterest. I have many, many pins on that board to help when I’m stumped about what my exercise routine will be for the day. Lastly, I throw in a walk two to three times a week. Every little bit of activity helps for mental and physical health!
