It took me a long time to hop on the essential oil bandwagon. I was very pessimistic about the whole thing. Assuming it was all a scam, I bought a few to try, but didn’t give much faith to their effectiveness. I had some core oils in my cupboard for about a year before deciding to try using them faithfully.
A reason to try
My husband was having some stomach troubles. We thought it was likely due to some anxiety and PTSD from his deployments OR a dairy sensitivity. Either way, it wasn’t getting better with the prescription medications he was taking. So, we did some research and found that Peppermint oil is great for stomach problems. We happened to have this one! He started putting a drop on his tongue each morning. He was actually able to stop taking his prescription medications and function with more normal bowels! It was a great relief to him and us.
Hooked
This got me hooked. I started using more and more oils. Diffusing them in the house for mood enhancers (like Joy) or to combat the cold & flu season (Thieves). I learned oils could be used for garden pests, cooking, and for chicken care. We began integrating oils whenever we could for daily ailments and issues. I’m happy to report that it’s now been about 2 years of oil heaven in our house. We have a large supply and use them regularly.
I am not an expert on essential oils or brands, but I know that through my research I learned that Young Living Essential Oils are 100% pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils. They openly share their growing, harvest, and packaging process and they offer a very wide variety of oils. They have great support system supplied by their trained distributors. Most Used
A few of our most used oils are Tea Tree (Melaleuca Alternifolia), Peppermint, Lavender and Thieves. Tea Tree has a variety of uses. I most commonly use it for mouth sores and acne. My husband uses the Peppermint for his stomach troubles but we also use it for headaches. If you feel a headache coming on, dab a little peppermint on your forehead, temples and back of the neck (just DO NOT get it in or near your eyes, trust me on this). Lavender is great for scabs, painful joints, and at bedtime to diffuse for relaxation- among many other things. Thieves is probably my favorite of all. We drop one dot of Thieves on our tongue every morning to ward off illnesses. I also use Thieves cleaner. I read this post about Thieves and it’s tremendous power to kill germs and bacteria and I was hooked! It’s a truly amazing product.
Combat Infection
Last summer our youngest son contracted impetigo. We contemplated taking him to the doctor and getting a prescription but decided to go the ‘oil route’. I began applying Tea Tree (or Melaleuca) to the infected areas and covering with bandaids. Eventually they stopped spreading and cleared up. It was not immediate, but it was so much better than using prescription medications.
Below is the only image I could find of his healing impetigo (nose and chin). These were the mild spots. His elbows, armpits and back had more severe spots. All healed nicely with the Tea Tree oil.
Storing oils
Our oil cabinet keeps growing as we experiment with and try new oils for varied purposes. Being able to avoid prescription or over the counter medications, especially antibiotics, is of great importance to us! This little cabinet from JoAnns is perfect for storing oils. The shelves are the right height and the depth is perfect. Plus, it looks really cute on the wall!
