I was on my way to pick up the girls from school today when I was certain that I saw a black horse dart across the road in front of me. Yep, I wasn’t having eye troubles, there was indeed an equine out for a run. Other moms told me that there wasn’t just the one horse, but five or six more horses and a lone sheep. What a rebel. Anyway, the four legged buddies had been grazing on a lawn by some homes when it was discovered by the owner that they were out and the sheriff was called to help with cars since animals are pretty much like toddlers; they do their own thing to the beat of their own drum. Horses along the roads in our town and even being ridden by the front of the school, are not unusual. Domesticated and wild animals coexist with us out here in rural Idaho. My girls heard a badger growl at them in our front yard this year. I’ve come across badgers three times (once on a family walk), we’ve seen and heard/hear coyotes at night, see hawks and owls and I’ve possibly seen a wolf with a small animal in its mouth (no joke) run across the road by our house right in front of me. However, a small herd of horses and the rebel sheep out and about grazing on lawns, especially during school pickup time, is not the norm. I do love the charm of farm animals and wild critters in our town and the area of where we live. The parents from out of state, mainly from big cities, really enjoy this and embrace it. Yee-haw!
*the horse pictured here, Bob, the human food loving horse, is one of the horses used on my family’s sheep ranch. he is pictured so that you may visualize the horse that darted across the road this afternoon. enjoy.
Livestock, wild birds and some deer in the winter, are a common sight in the area of the valley where we live. Where my sister lives, in Boise (deer, yes)? There are eagles that live in downtown Boise and the city allows chickens in city limits but turkeys wandering the streets? This is a new one as far as I know.
These guys or gals (I’ll admit, not up on my sex identification of turkeys) are almost flaunting their chubby bodies after our most turkey driven meal of the year. Ha, ha. Hopefully the birds had a fun time walking up and down the streets among historical homes, making home owners and drivers alike, gawk at them with the attitude of, “Oh yeah, we’re here suckas. So much for stuffing us!” Cue the head-tossed-back-laugh from the turkeys.
